A guy I work with wants to buy my 97 Chevy
He came by the house today and took it for a drive and took it to his mechanic to look at it. He told me his mechanic said it needs an intake manifold based on the milage.
1 of 2 things is happening here. His mechanic is ripping him off because he doesn’t know about cars or he is trying to get me to come down on the price and doesn’t know enough about cars to say things that make sense.
What say you Oppo?

T ell him,”YOU need a new intake manifold!”
Then slam the hood and drive away, never to talk to him again...

Dammit, I never had my car.

If you don’t need to move this thing fast, I’d assume #1 u nless you know this coworker is kind of a jerk, and politely explain why #1 is bullshit. If from pushback it becomes clear it’s more #2, I would try to engage directly on price and negotiate in those terms rather than made-up deficiencies.

Is there something about the Vortec manifolds breaking that I’m unaware of, or was the mechanic actually referring to the GASKETS?

Only thing I could think of is a new spider on the manifold? Trying to give the benefit of the doubt and assume your friend didn't really understand the mechanic...

I am not in a hurry at all (I have been waiting almost 3 months for someone else to come up with money to buy it) he happened to ask about it and I was like, sure let’s see what we can do.
I honestly think it’s #1, he’s a pretty good guy and drives completely normal cars, I think he just doesn’t know.

My off the cuff reaction is WTF? That’s all I got. Seems like someone shouldn’t be buying 22 year old trucks.

Oh ya, left that detail out. I asked if he meant gasket and co-worker said whole manifold.
Being a serial GMT400 owner I have never heard of such a thing.

Any chance that “whole manifold” didn’t mean replacement so much as it meant “the whole manifold needs to come off ”? Cuz I’ll admit- that’s not an unreasonable way to describe a gasket job.
It’s not like... cracked somewhere, is it?

Ya, he’s definitely not the type I would have expected to want it. I am thinking it’s a midlife crisis “ those were cool when I was young" thing.

No, there’s nothing wrong with it. I honestly think he’s getting ripped off by the mechanic.
EDIT: He said it was due to the mileage. Not any sort of damage or anything.

Nooooooo!

That’s complete bs. Word of advise: walk away from this buyer. Aside from the issues that can come up from selling to someone you know, this issue alone is enough reason to walk away from selling it to them in my opinion.
Ifyour engine is running fine and you don’t have coolant consumption issues, then your intake manifold is probably fine. It also wouldn’t hurt to do a visual inspection for warping.
But no, an intake manifold is not a regular service item for a vortec and shouldn’t need servicing. Anymore than it would be a service item on any other SBC.

Ya, we kind of have the space for it, but I want to put the Nimitz and the MB in the garage.
If we had a 3 car garage I would probably keep it, full coverage insurance is only $180 for 6 months and it's awesome.

I honestly think his mechanic is trying to pull one over on him.

Never sell a car to someone you have to see every day.

He'll be knocking on your door every time he has a problem.

Intake gaskets will leak sometimes. But you don't do them based on mileage and you generally don't need to replace the whole intake manifold.

This is when you say alright, that’s a cheap fix and send him a link to the gasket on RockAuto for $14.3 8. Tell him you’ll knock $15 off the price.
Let’s see if he knows how much labor that wo uld be.

Yeah, sounds like his mechanic is bending him over.

We all have old Chevy trucks here of all years. 1 out of 30 trucks have an intake gasket failure. It happens though. Usually the antifreeze exits the exhaust so it’s not a big deal. The opinion based on mileage is unfounded. It’s not a super car. Chevys trucks run like crap for ever.
That’s a nice truck. Thumbs up.

So much this!

Why sell it? Do you have another truck in your stable? I’ve been hanging on to my ‘99 Dakota for years and plan to keep it as long as possible. I don’t drive it much, but it comes in handy a lot. Especially with the recent move. My truck got a work out. If you need the garage space, can you park it outside under a cover? I was doing that for the past 10 years at my old house. Now the new house has a third bay on the garage so it will finally get a proper home. But that thing looks clean.

agreed, I wouldn’t sell to him.
This is a nice old truck, it’ll sell to anyone quickly. Why sell to someone who will likely irritate you about everything that happens to it. Ask me how I know.

what’s this thing sell for? I imagine it would sell quickly to many interested buyers as it looks especially nice for the vintage. As stated below, I’d not sell it to him.

Ya I bought a newer truck about 3 months ago. I kind of have the room but, it’s really about ease of life. Once less thing to worry about.

I can’t sell mine. It’s beater shape but the. 454 SS is getting a modern drivetrain. Home Depot in style.

I was planning on asking for pics, when I saw your screen name. Is that a 454 lsx?

6.2 l94 and 6l80e out of a Denali Tahoe. The lsx is way too expensive for me. The truck is a 1990 454ss I have had for years. The goal is to daily it in the summer time. The big block set up ate to much fuel and only had 235 hp.
